Sitting within the city boundary of Leicester, Beaumont Leys is a suburb in the ceremonial county of Leicestershire, England. The name itself derives from the French for ‘beautiful hill or mountain’, though the area today is characterised by large residential estates, schools, and industrial development rather than any notable elevation. The suburb borders the wards of Abbey to the east, Fosse to the south-east, and New Parks to the south, while the Leicestershire villages of Anstey and Glenfield lie to the north and west.
Growth and Development
Before the 1970s, the land was mostly farmland and sewage infrastructure, with little residential presence. The 2021 census recorded a ward population of 18,808, up from 16,480 a decade earlier in 2011, reflecting the steady pace at which the area has grown. Prior to the 2011 census, the Office for National Statistics had classed Beaumont Leys as an environ separate from the city itself. Development from the 1970s onwards produced several distinct housing estates, including Anstey Heights, Thurcaston Park, Ashton Green, and Verdant Rise. The Thurcaston Park development, on the north side of the suburb, is projected to reach 2,000 homes on completion. Administratively, Beaumont Leys was once an extra-parochial tract, then a civil parish in its own right from 1858, until it was abolished on 1 April 1935 and merged with Leicester, with parts also transferred to Anstey and Thurcaston. At the 1931 census, the parish held a population of just 169.
Shopping, Schools, and Industry
The Beaumont Shopping Centre is the main retail area, one of the larger suburban shopping facilities in Leicester. Smaller precincts, including the Astil Lodge shops, occupy land that was previously farmed. In 2023, Leicester City Council announced the closure of Beaumont Leys market. The suburb also has a church, a leisure centre, a library, and a police station. Secondary education is provided by Babington Academy and Beaumont Leys School, the latter now a specialised science school, rebuilt in 2009 with a City Learning Centre alongside it. Primary schools in the area include Beaumont Lodge Primary School, Heatherbrook Primary School, Buswells Lodge Primary School, and Glebelands Primary School. The suburb’s industrial estate includes the main Walkers Crisps factory, along with Office Depot and Trelleborg, with a smaller industrial estate located to the south. The locally referenced heart of the estate is centred on Strasbourg Drive.
