Spreading across 168 acres in the Braunstone area of Leicester, Braunstone Park is one of the city’s larger public green spaces. Its grounds include two lakes, open grassland, woodlands, and meadows, making it a varied space that draws visitors throughout the year.
History and Heritage
At the centre of the park stands Braunstone Hall, a Georgian house built in 1775 as a private residence. The building was converted into a school in 1932, and it remains a distinctive presence within the park grounds. A small museum housed in the park opens on special occasions for those interested in the site’s past.
Gardens, Sport, and Facilities
The park has three formal gardens: a war memorial garden, a walled garden, and an azalea garden. Younger visitors have access to a children’s play area and a skate park, while outdoor gyms and four football pitches cater to those after more active pursuits. On the edge of the park sits Braunstone Leisure Centre, run by Leicester City Council, which adds further sporting options nearby.
Parkrun
Every Saturday morning at 9am, Braunstone Park hosts a free, volunteer-marshalled parkrun. The event has been running since its first outing on 25 September 2010, giving regular walkers, joggers, and runners a weekly fixture in the park’s calendar.
