Sitting beside the Haymarket Shopping Centre in central Leicester, Haymarket Bus Station is the city’s principal bus terminal, handling local services across Leicester and connecting passengers to destinations beyond the city. The station is accessed from Belgrave Gate, which forms the main pedestrian frontage.
History and Development
The bus station was first built in 1994 at a proposed cost of £2 million, timed to coincide with a major refurbishment of the adjacent Haymarket Shopping Centre. In January 2015 the station closed to undergo a significant redevelopment that doubled its size, and the enlarged facility reopened in May 2016.
Services
The bus station operates seven days a week. Operators using the station include Arriva Midlands, Central Connect, Centrebus, and First Leicester, covering the bulk of local routes in and around the city. Stagecoach Midlands also runs the X7 service from here to Northampton. The anticlockwise circular Hop! service uses a stop on Belgrave Gate outside the main station entrance rather than the terminal itself.
Facilities
The main Leicester Shopmobility offices are based at the station’s Belgrave Gate entrance, with a smaller Shopmobility office also found within Highcross Leicester. Public toilets are available at the station and have been recently refurbished, with changing places accessible facilities also provided.
